IU and Other Stars Targeted by Political ‘Coffee Prepayment’ Demands
Singer-actress IU and several Korean celebrities have become the focus of politically charged social media comments as controversy surrounding post-election protests continues to grow.
The issue emerged amid ongoing demonstrations related to allegations surrounding the June 3 local elections, with some protesters gathering near vote-counting centers for several consecutive days.
Old Donation Gesture Resurfaces
On June 7, comments appeared on IU’s Instagram account demanding that she once again purchase drinks for demonstrators.
One comment read, “IU, send some coffee to Jamsil. You have plenty of money. Are only left-wing protesters considered citizens?”
The remark referenced IU’s widely praised gesture in December 2024, when she prepaid for drinks and snacks for fans attending rallies calling for the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol following the declaration of martial law.
Park Bo-young and Lee Dong-wook Also Mentioned
Actors Park Bo-young and Lee Dong-wook were similarly targeted.
Comments left on their social media accounts included requests such as, “Please prepay for coffee near Olympic Park in Jamsil,” and “Can’t you at least support citizens working to protect democracy?”
Others directly questioned why celebrities who had previously expressed opinions on political issues had remained silent regarding the current protests.
Debate Over Political Pressure on Celebrities
The wave of comments has sparked criticism from observers who argue that entertainers are being subjected to political loyalty tests based on past actions or public statements.
Some commenters accused celebrities of selectively speaking out depending on the issue, while others defended the stars and argued that public figures should not be pressured into taking positions on every political controversy.
The situation has also fueled counterreactions online, with supporters on both sides of the political spectrum exchanging sarcastic responses and criticism through social media posts.
Growing Scrutiny of Celebrity Activism
The incident highlights the increasingly complicated relationship between celebrity activism and political discourse in South Korea.
While public gestures such as donations, charitable support, or statements of solidarity are often praised, they can later become subjects of political scrutiny as debates shift and public opinion becomes more polarized.

For now, IU has publicly responded to the comments. But Actress Park Bo-young responded calmly after becoming one of several celebrities targeted by politically charged comments linked to the ballot shortage controversy.
On June 7, Park addressed the issue through the fan communication platform Bubble, saying, “I only found out about it through Bubble. What strange people.”
Reassuring concerned fans, she added, “Don’t worry. It doesn’t affect me much,” displaying a composed attitude despite the wave of online criticism and comment attacks directed at her social media accounts.
