IU Speaks Out Following ‘21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife’ Controversy
On May 16, the same day the drama aired its finale, IU attended a special group screening event with fans at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall in Seoul. The star, who was also celebrating her birthday that day, took the stage after the screening to thank fans and share her honest thoughts.
“I’ve been thinking a lot lately. Things could have been different if I had done better,” IU said. “As someone who receives so much love from all of you, I’ll work harder and become more responsible. I want to become an IU who can show even better sides of herself.”
She continued, “If I ever disappoint people or show shortcomings, that is completely my fault. I believe there’s a reason behind everything people say to me, and I should listen carefully. If there are areas where I lack, please tell me, criticize me, and push me so I can become a better person.”
IU also expressed gratitude to fans for continuing to support her despite the criticism, ending her speech with a deep 90-degree bow.
Although the singer-actress did not directly mention the drama by name, many interpreted her comments as an indirect response to the growing backlash surrounding 21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife.
The series faced criticism throughout its run over acting performances, world-building, and alleged historical inaccuracies. Controversy intensified after Episode 11 aired on May 15, when viewers pointed out that officials shouted “Cheonse” instead of “Manse” during Prince Ian’s coronation scene — language historically associated with vassal states rather than sovereign monarchs.
Additional criticism followed over the use of ceremonial crowns and what some viewers described as Chinese-inspired tea etiquette within the drama’s fictional constitutional monarchy setting. Some audiences argued the series blurred Korean and Chinese historical hierarchies inappropriately.
As the controversy escalated, the production team issued an official apology through the drama’s homepage, stating, “We sincerely apologize for causing concern regarding world-building and historical authenticity issues.” The producers acknowledged they “failed to carefully examine the evolution of Joseon-era court etiquette.”

The team further explained that the drama combined romance with alternate-history storytelling, admitting they should have approached the blending of fictional and historical elements more cautiously. They also announced plans to edit the controversial audio and subtitles for rebroadcasts, VOD, and OTT streaming versions.
Despite the backlash, the drama ended on a strong note, recording its highest nationwide viewership rating of 13.8 percent according to Nielsen Korea.
Known globally for hit songs and acclaimed acting performances, IU remains one of South Korea’s most influential entertainers. Beyond music, she has built a successful acting career through dramas such as My Mister, Hotel Del Luna, and When Life Gives You Tangerines, earning praise for her emotional performances and strong public image.
