Jeon Somi has revealed the behind-the-scenes story of I.O.I’s long-awaited reunion, offering fans a closer look at how the group came back together nearly a decade after debut.

Appearing on Radio Star, Somi explained that the reunion was driven by a shared desire to reconnect with fans who cherished the group during its original run.

“We wanted people to remember the girls they loved back then,” she said, noting that previous attempts during the group’s 5th and 7th anniversaries had ultimately fallen through.

Members took matters into their own hands

This time, however, the members took a more proactive approach. According to Somi, they drafted their own agreement stating that group activities would take priority over individual schedules once rehearsals began.

She added that the members personally brought the document to CJ ENM, the company behind the group’s formation through Produce 101.

Somi also credited Chungha as a key figure in initiating the reunion, saying the members came together after receiving her call.

Strong bond remains despite time apart

While the preparation process took time, Somi emphasized that the group’s bond remains as strong as ever.

“We can talk for hours until our throats hurt—even without drinks,” she said, describing the lively atmosphere among members. “We even keep propolis spray nearby while chatting.”

The candid remarks highlighted the enduring friendship that has kept the group connected despite years of separate activities.

Comeback set for milestone anniversary

I.O.I is set to release a new album on May 19 to mark its 10th debut anniversary, signaling a major moment for longtime fans.

However, not all members will participate in the upcoming activities. Kang Mina and Zhou Jieqiong are expected to sit out due to pre-scheduled commitments.

Even so, the reunion marks a rare return for one of K-pop’s most iconic project groups—this time driven by the members’ own determination.
