BTS and K-Dramas Inspire New Korean Language Learning Materials for Students Worldwide

South Korea’s Ministry of Education is expanding its global Korean-language education initiative with the development of nine new learning materials, including a BTS-themed supplementary textbook and country-specific resources for overseas students.

The ministry announced plans to produce a total of nine educational resources this year, consisting of one Korean-language supplementary textbook using BTS-related content, one beginner-level smart digital textbook, and seven customized textbooks tailored to countries such as India, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Approximately 260,000 copies are expected to be distributed worldwide.

Recognizing the growing interest in Korean culture among young people abroad, the ministry has been developing BTS-based Korean-language learning materials since 2021. To date, eight BTS supplementary textbooks have been created and distributed. This year’s edition will serve as a comprehensive volume featuring selected content from the previous releases, allowing more students to learn Korean through K-pop.

The ministry will also begin distributing a K-drama-based Korean-language textbook developed last year. Designed around everyday situations portrayed in Korean television dramas, the material aims to help students learn practical Korean while gaining insight into contemporary Korean culture.

In addition, the ministry plans to launch a new smartphone-friendly digital textbook. The new version will allow access on mobile devices and include AI‑assisted learning functions, unlike previous digital materials that optimized content mainly for computer use. Researchers will use educational data collected through the platform to advance future studies on Korean‑language education abroad.

To meet growing demand from overseas governments, South Korea will also develop seven country-specific Korean-language textbooks for six nations, including India, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Local educators and education officials will participate in the writing and review process to ensure the materials reflect each country’s language, culture, and educational curriculum.

Education Ministry Develops 9 New Learning Materials

Since 2021, the Ministry of Education has distributed more than 1.04 million Korean-language textbooks to elementary and secondary schools worldwide. The ministry’s curriculum is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), providing internationally recognized standards for Korean-language learning.

Currently, the ministry has developed a total of 80 Korean-language educational resources, available in both print and digital formats.

Education Minister Choi Kyo-jin emphasized the importance of quality teaching materials in expanding Korean-language education globally, stating that future projects will continue to reflect the specific needs of individual countries and students around the world.
