SHINee’s Key Returns to Music Scene Amid Debate Over Comeback Timing
SHINee member Key is officially returning to the spotlight as the group prepares for its long-awaited comeback, months after the controversy surrounding illegal medical treatment allegations forced him to suspend activities.
SHINee will release its sixth mini album Atmos on June 1, marking the group’s first new music in approximately a year since the 2025 single Poet | Artist. Ahead of the release, the veteran K-pop group will also hold its eighth solo concert series, THE TRILOGY I – 2026 SHINee WORLD VIII : [THE INVERT], from May 29 to 31 at KSPO DOME in Seoul.
Attention has particularly centered on Key, whose return has sparked divided reactions among fans and the public alike.
The singer recently appeared in SHINee’s official schedule film uploaded to social media, taking on the role of a weathercaster while introducing the group’s comeback timeline with his trademark wit and bright energy. The video effectively confirmed his return to entertainment activities after nearly six months away from regular promotions.

Key’s hiatus began in December last year when he became embroiled in the so-called “Injection Aunt” scandal. Allegations surfaced claiming he had received illegal medical treatments from an unlicensed individual known online as a “shot aunt.”
At the time, SM Entertainment explained that Key had initially believed the individual was a licensed medical professional after being introduced through an acquaintance. The agency admitted that treatments had later been conducted outside a hospital setting when regular visits became difficult, but maintained that Key had been unaware of the person’s lack of qualifications.
Although Key acknowledged receiving unauthorized medical care and apologized for his carelessness, he denied intentionally participating in illegal activity. Nevertheless, the controversy led him to step away from several television appearances, including fixed cast roles on popular variety shows Amazing Saturday and Home Alone (I Live Alone).

Public opinion divided over comeback timing
Now, with SHINee’s comeback drawing closer, public opinion remains sharply divided.
Some critics argue that six months is too short of a reflection period considering the seriousness of the issue. They questioned whether his hiatus was meaningful enough. Others, however, believe Key himself was misled and point out that he was not criminally charged. They argued that his return through group activities feels natural rather than forced.
Industry insiders have also weighed in carefully on the situation. Some believe the comeback may feel premature given public sentiment. Other observers believe returning with SHINee, rather than solo schedules, offers Key the safest and most strategic path.
Despite the lingering controversy, expectations for SHINee’s return remain high. Since debuting in 2008, the group has built a reputation as one of K-pop’s most influential boy bands, known for trendsetting music, experimental concepts, and powerful performances. Key himself has earned praise over the years not only for his stage presence but also for his sharp humor and strong personality across variety shows and fashion projects.
As SHINee prepares to step back onto the stage together, much of the public conversation now centers on whether Key can regain broader trust through sincerity, consistency, and the group’s upcoming promotions.
