Cha Eun-woo is set to return to the screen with a new Netflix series, marking his first major project following a recent tax-related controversy.

On April 17, Netflix confirmed that the original series Wonderfuls will premiere on May 15, unveiling its official poster and teaser trailer. The announcement signals a swift continuation of Cha’s acting career after weeks of public scrutiny.

New series blends comedy and supernatural action

Wonderfuls is described as a comic action adventure set in 1999, a period marked by widespread doomsday predictions. The story follows a group of ordinary individuals who unexpectedly gain superpowers and become entangled in a battle against villains threatening peace.

In the series, Cha Eun-woo plays Lee Woon-jung, a character who develops unusual abilities alongside others portrayed by Park Eun-bin, Choi Dae-hoon, and Im Sung-jae.

The production has also drawn attention for reuniting director Yoo In-sik and Park Eun-bin, who previously worked together on the hit drama Extraordinary Attorney Woo. Early promotional materials highlight a mix of humor and fantasy, emphasizing character-driven storytelling within a high-concept premise.

The teaser trailer showcases the group discovering their abilities in unconventional ways, balancing comedic moments with hints of larger-scale conflict.

Return follows resolution of tax controversy

Cha’s comeback comes after he faced allegations earlier this year involving unpaid taxes reportedly totaling around 20 billion KRW. The issue drew widespread attention, prompting the actor to address the matter publicly.

On April 8, Cha stated that he respects the procedures and findings of the National Tax Service and confirmed that all related taxes had been paid. He also issued an apology, expressing a commitment to fully comply with any remaining processes.

Subsequent reports indicated that part of the initial assessment involved overlapping taxation, resulting in a reduced final payment estimated at approximately 13 billion KRW.

While the controversy sparked debate at the time, the confirmation of payment and his public response appear to have stabilized the situation ahead of his return to entertainment activities.

Acting career continues alongside ASTRO activities

Beyond acting, Cha Eun-woo remains a member of ASTRO, maintaining a dual career in music and television.

His participation in Wonderfuls reflects his ongoing presence in the drama industry, where he has built a steady portfolio of leading roles. The upcoming series is expected to further position him within the global streaming market, given Netflix’s international reach.

With its release date now confirmed, Wonderfuls will serve as a key moment in Cha Eun-woo’s 2026 schedule, drawing attention both for its content and for the context surrounding his return.

As anticipation builds, the project is likely to test audience reception following the recent controversy, while also showcasing his continued activity as both an actor and idol.
