A recent concert by BTS has led to a measurable increase in foreign tourist spending in South Korea, with delivery platform transactions rising sharply during the event period, according to industry data released on April 21.

Delivery app operator Woowa Brothers, which runs Baedal Minjok, the nation’s top food delivery app, reported that foreign payment transactions between April 9 and 12 increased significantly compared to the previous week (April 2–5). The company attributed the surge largely to overseas visitors attending BTS concerts held in Goyang during the same timeframe.

Concert-driven demand spikes in Goyang and nearby districts

The impact was most visible in Goyang, where the concerts took place. Foreign transaction volume in the city rose by more than 180% during the period. In Ilsanseo-gu, home to the main stadium venue, the increase exceeded 320%, reflecting concentrated demand around the event site.

Spillover effects were also observed in surrounding areas. Districts in Seoul, including Mapo-gu—known for neighborhoods such as Hongdae—as well as Eunpyeong-gu and Seodaemun-gu, recorded increases of around 10% in foreign user transactions.

Industry observers noted that the uptick extended beyond typical peak periods. Even on weekdays, when international tourist activity is usually lower, foreign payment volume rose noticeably. This suggests a short-term but significant influx of overseas visitors tied directly to the concert schedule.

Platform upgrades support growing global user base

Woowa Brothers reportedly said the increase also reflects ongoing efforts to improve accessibility for international users. The platform has expanded AI-based multilingual services, allowing users to browse, order, and track deliveries in English, Chinese, and Japanese.

In addition to supporting overseas credit card payments in Korean won, the company has integrated global mobile payment options such as Alipay and WeChat Pay. These features have lowered barriers for foreign users unfamiliar with local payment systems.

A company representative stated that the rise in transactions appears closely linked to the BTS concerts, adding that further service enhancements are planned to accommodate growing demand from international customers.

K-pop events continue shaping local consumption patterns

The data highlights the broader economic ripple effects of large-scale K-pop events. Beyond ticket sales and tourism, concerts by global acts like BTS are increasingly influencing local consumption patterns, including food delivery and mobile commerce.

Analysts point out that such events can temporarily reshape urban spending behavior, particularly in areas surrounding venues. The clustering of international visitors creates short bursts of economic activity that benefit local businesses and digital platforms alike.

As K-pop continues to attract global audiences, its role as a driver of tourism-linked consumption is becoming more pronounced. The latest figures from Baedal Minjok suggest that even short event windows can generate measurable economic impact, reinforcing the industry’s significance beyond entertainment.
