Karina of aespa has shared her personal motivation for pursuing a driver’s license, drawing attention for a heartfelt story involving her grandmother.
On April 14, a video titled “The Only Shortcut to Passing Is Enough Practice” was released on aespa’s official YouTube channel, documenting Karina’s visit to a driving test center and her experience taking the written exam.
Personal motivation rooted in family
In the video, Karina explained that her decision to obtain a driver’s license was inspired by her grandmother, with whom she currently lives. She recalled reading a passage about taking a drive with a grandparent, which led her to reflect on her own situation.
“I wanted to take my grandmother in the passenger seat of my car before she gets older,” she said, adding that the thought prompted her to act immediately. According to Karina, she informed her manager the very next day and proceeded to begin the licensing process.
When staff suggested a potential driving destination such as Yangpyeong, she responded with humor, noting the distance might be challenging for a new driver. However, she reaffirmed her intention, saying she would take her grandmother anywhere once she is able to drive, while jokingly advising her to choose closer destinations.
Exam success and future plans
Despite a busy schedule, Karina prepared for the test by studying practice exams in her spare time. Her efforts resulted in a strong performance, as she passed the written test with a score of 85.
Expressing confidence about the next stage, she stated that she expects to perform well in the practical driving test, citing her coordination and physical ability. She also shared a long-standing interest in operating larger vehicles, including trucks and buses, and indicated that she may pursue a higher-level license in the future after obtaining a standard one.
Her candid remarks and family-oriented motivation have drawn supportive reactions from fans, highlighting a more personal side of the artist beyond her stage activities.

Overview of Korea’s driver’s license system
In South Korea, driver’s licenses are broadly divided into two main categories: Class 1 and Class 2.
Class 2 licenses are the most common and allow drivers to operate standard passenger vehicles. This category includes automatic transmission (Type 2 Automatic) and manual transmission (Type 2 Manual) options, with most first-time drivers choosing the automatic version.
Class 1 licenses are more advanced and permit the operation of larger vehicles such as trucks and buses. Obtaining a Class 1 license generally requires additional testing and experience.
The licensing process typically involves three stages: a written (theory) exam, a functional driving test conducted on a closed course, and a road test under real traffic conditions.
As Karina continues her licensing journey, attention remains on whether she will complete the process and fulfill her goal of driving her grandmother herself.
