Hyeri Addresses Viral Body-Shaming Debate

Singer and actress Hyeri has spoken out after online discussions about her appearance during a recent fan meeting sparked debate over body image and beauty standards in the entertainment industry.

On June 16, Hyeri addressed the controversy through a fan communication platform, sharing her honest thoughts on the criticism she received following her solo fan meeting in Seoul.

“Personally, I like myself the way I am,” she wrote. “But I understand that some people may think it doesn’t look professional.”

Her comments quickly drew praise from fans who applauded her candid response to the scrutiny surrounding her appearance.

Fan Meeting Outfit Sparks Unexpected Controversy

The discussion began after Hyeri’s 2026 HYERI ASIA TOUR FANMEETING IN SEOUL, held on June 13 at Samsung Hall in Ewha Womans University.

During the event, Hyeri performed a mix of Girls’ Day classics and popular songs by other idol groups while wearing several stage outfits, including a form-fitting dress.

After highlight videos from the event were shared on social media, some viewers began commenting on what appeared to be a visible stomach line beneath the dress.

The footage quickly sparked online debate, with some users claiming the outfit made her appear to have gained weight, while others argued the effect was caused by lighting, camera angles, and the thin fabric of the dress.

What began as a minor observation soon escalated into a broader discussion about celebrity body standards.

“Why Must Being Thin Equal Being Professional?”

Rather than ignoring the conversation, Hyeri directly addressed the criticism.

“We are all beautiful as we are,” she told fans. “I don’t really understand why being extremely thin is considered professional.”

At the same time, she acknowledged fans’ concerns and said she would continue taking care of her health.

“If that’s what Hyerumi [her fandom] wants, I’ll work hard. I’ll exercise and stay healthy,” she added.

Many fans viewed the statement as a thoughtful response to the unrealistic expectations often placed on female celebrities.

Fans Rally Behind Hyeri

Shortly after the controversy gained attention, Hyeri shared 20 behind-the-scenes photos from the fan meeting on social media under the caption “Night Version.”

The images featured several of her stage outfits, including a black leather corset ensemble, an off-shoulder dress, and a polka-dot mini dress.

Fans pointed out that the photos showcased Hyeri’s toned physique and healthy appearance, arguing that the original controversy was largely fueled by selective screenshots and misleading angles.

Supportive comments quickly flooded social media, with many criticizing the culture of scrutinizing female celebrities’ bodies over minor visual differences.

A Larger Conversation About Beauty Standards

The incident has reignited discussions about the intense pressure female entertainers face regarding their appearance.

In recent years, numerous K-pop idols and actresses have spoken openly about the unrealistic expectations surrounding weight, body shape, and physical appearance.

For many observers, Hyeri’s response stood out because she shifted the conversation away from defending her body and toward questioning why thinness is so often equated with professionalism and success.

Continuing Her Asia Tour

Despite the online controversy, Hyeri appears focused on her upcoming activities.

After successfully wrapping up the Seoul stop of her fan meeting tour, she is scheduled to continue meeting fans across Asia, with upcoming events planned in Macau, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, and Taipei.

While the debate surrounding her appearance may eventually fade, Hyeri’s comments have sparked a broader discussion about body image, self-confidence, and the standards celebrities are expected to meet in the public eye.
