NCT member Ten is officially parting ways with SM Entertainment after a decade, marking a major turning point not only for the artist but also for the future of the globally popular K-pop group.
On April 6, SM Entertainment confirmed that Ten’s exclusive contract will conclude on April 8 after “deep discussions regarding his future direction.” Despite the contract ending, the agency clarified that Ten will continue participating in activities with NCT and its China-based unit WayV through ongoing coordination.
The company stated, “We sincerely thank Ten for his outstanding efforts as both a group member and solo artist. We will wholeheartedly support his new beginning,” while also emphasizing continued support for WayV’s group promotions.
A Decade With NCT
Ten first debuted in 2016 through NCT U, one of the rotational units of NCT. Known for his exceptional dance skills, artistic versatility, and global appeal, Ten quickly established himself as one of the group’s standout performers.
He later became a core member of WayV, which focuses on the Chinese market, and also joined SM’s project supergroup SuperM, further expanding his global recognition.
Over the years, Ten has balanced group promotions with solo releases, building a reputation as a well-rounded artist capable of crossing markets and genres.
Ten Shares Emotional Letter
Following the announcement, Ten personally addressed fans through a heartfelt message, expressing both gratitude and honesty about his decision.
He admitted that he struggled to find the right way to share the news, writing that he had “thought over and over” about how to communicate it better.
Reassuring fans, he emphasized that his connection to the group remains unchanged:
“I will continue as Ten of NCT and WayV, and I want to keep spending time with you.”
At the same time, he confirmed a new direction:
“I am preparing to take on new challenges as a solo artist.”
Reflecting on his journey, Ten described his years with SM Entertainment as filled with “precious and happy memories.”
He also opened up about his personal growth, recalling how he moved from Thailand to Korea at a young age and faced unfamiliar and challenging moments — all while being supported by staff and fans.
However, approaching a new stage in life, he revealed a turning point:
“As I near 30, I began asking myself what kind of person I want to become and what kind of music I want to show.”
After extensive discussions with the company, Ten decided to leave SM and pursue a new environment, acknowledging that the decision was not easy but necessary for his growth.

NCT at a Crossroads
Ten’s departure comes at a particularly sensitive time for NCT, which is approaching its 10th debut anniversary.
Recently, key member Mark was also reported to have left SM Entertainment and exited the group, sending shockwaves through the fandom and raising concerns about NCT’s long-term structure.
With multiple lineup changes and contract shifts happening in a short period, industry observers are increasingly viewing NCT as entering a “transition era” — one that could redefine how the group operates moving forward.
Industry Impact
Ten’s decision to leave the agency while continuing group activities highlights a growing trend in the K-pop industry, where artists seek greater independence without fully severing ties with their groups.
Experts suggest that this type of arrangement could:
- Allow artists more creative freedom
- Enable global solo expansion
- Introduce more flexible contract structures
For a large-scale project group like NCT, which operates across multiple units and markets, such flexibility may become essential for long-term sustainability.
What’s Next for Ten — and NCT?
Despite leaving SM Entertainment, Ten made it clear that he is committed to both his group identity and his personal growth.
He expressed deep gratitude to his fellow members and fans, saying their support has shaped his journey so far.
“I don’t yet know exactly what I will show you next, but I want to walk that path together with you.”
As Ten embarks on a new chapter as a solo artist while maintaining ties with NCT and WayV, all eyes are now on how both his career — and the future of NCT — will evolve in this period of change.
